[SOPHISTRY]　あなた自信についてまずは簡単な自己紹介をお願いします。

[ULUC KECIK]　僕は、写真と物書きが好きな旅人である。トルコのイスタンブール出身だ。今までにネパールからアイスランドまで異国の土地を横断してきた。今現在もこの地球を駆け巡り、旅で見て学んだことを書き上げてロードストーリーとしていくつかの旅行雑誌に提供している。

[SOPHISTRY]　Please briefly introduce yourself.

[ULUC KECIK]　I am an independent traveller who is into photography and writing. My home town is Istanbul Turkey. From Nepal to Iceland I have traversed distinct places and cultures. Currently I keep trotting the globe, producing road stories for various travel magazines; observing learning and documenting.

[SOPHISTRY]　あなたの作品について教えてください。

[ULUC KECIK]　2007年まではドキュメンタリー映像などの動画撮影を中心に活動していたけど、最近の作品のほとんどは写真ばかりで、この2年間は中東地域を中心に旅してきた。僕の作品は旅の写真とその国の現状を映し出した融合的なものだ。

[SOPHISTRY]　Please tell us about your work.

[ULUC KECIK]　Until 2007 I was more into shooting documentary videos. However todays portfolio mainly consists of stills from the routes I followed in the Middle East in the last couple of years. A mix of travel photography and photo-reportages.

[SOPHISTRY]　あなたの作品のインスピレーションはどこから生まれてくるのですか？

[ULUC KECIK]　僕を突き動かすものは、現実を探すということ、命や自然の本質をつかむことなんだ。見かけは違っても僕達はみんな一つなんだってことに気づく。だから様々な文化圏を回ってみると、この地球上の人達が如何に似通っているのかがよくわかるんだ。これが僕のインスピレーションの源となっている。

[SOPHISTRY]　Where do you get your inspiration from?

[ULUC KECIK]　My motive is the search for reality, trying to catch the essence of life and nature; I realize that we are all ONE despite our distinct appearances. So going through various cultures and seeing how alike actually people of the earth are would be my main inspiration.

[SOPHISTRY]　あなたが今最も興味を持っていることを教えてください。

[ULUC KECIK]　最近は撮影より編集に時間を費やしている。これをしていると、旅行雑誌のための旅の写真がいかに狭い視野を強いられているかに気づく。この枠を打開するために、アナトリアやシリアで撮影した写真の中から、未出版のものを掘り起こしてみてること。　他にも、ウェブサイト製作中で自分のブログと写真をみんなと共有することができるようにすること。

[SOPHISTRY]　What are you most interested in now?

[ULUC KECIK]　Currently I tend to spend more time on editing than shooting. In doing that I found out how travel photography I produced for magazines forced my work into a narrower perspective. So I have been trying to break that frame just digging out an unpublished set of photos taken during my travels in Anatolia and Syria. One other thing I am working on is an individual website that will enable me to share a blog and that will make some prints available to others.

[SOPHISTRY]　あなたのクリーエーターとしての今後のビジョンを教えてください。

[ULUC KECIK]　長期計画はあまり好きではないけど、これからはもっと地元に密着したフォトジャーナリズムに関わっていきたいと思ってる。遠隔の地を見ることを楽しむ傍ら、今日は自分のルーツに関心が向いていて、自分の住む街や国の奥深さに気づいたんだ。これにより可能な限り現地の人たちの中に溶け込もうと努めていると、そこにある暗号みないなものを読み取ることができるようになって、人ともっとつながりみたいなものが持てるようになるんだ。しばらくは、写真の師と謳われる人たちがこの地方至るとこで開催する国際的な写真ワークショップに参加していきたい。

[SOPHISTRY]　Please tell us what your vision is as an artist for the future?

[ULUC KECIK]　I don't like to make long term plans. However my intention is to get more involved in photojournalism on a more local basis. Although I very much enjoy discovering remote destinations, today I tend to turn my face to my roots, recognizing how rich, the city and the country I am living in actually are. As a result I think of getting as local as possible in the region I live, where I am able to read the codes and can make connections. Meanwhile I am willing to participate in international photography workshops led by master photographers that are taking place around the region.

[SOPHISTRY]　どのような作業環境で作品を作られているのですか。

[ULUC KECIK]　旅をする時は、なるべく地元の人たちに密着できるようホテルには泊まらないようにしてる。だから僕の仕事場の環境は常に変化していて、良い時は新しい友人たちで溢れる。編集や執筆に忙しい時は家で一人で仕事するのが好きだ。午前中が一日で最も充実した時間だ。窓際に腰をかけてコーヒーを飲みながら、感動的なボスフォラスの眺めを見ながら呼吸をするんだ。

[SOPHISTRY]　When you make your work, what kind of work environment are you in?

[ULUC KECIK]　When I travel I try to get as local as possible and usually stay with locals as guest rather than to stay in a hotel. So my working environment always shifts and luckily is always full of good new friends. When getting busy with editing or writing I prefer to be at home and alone. Mornings are the most productive time of my day. I adore sitting next to the window in the mornings drinking a coffee, watching and breathing the inspiring Bosphorus.

[SOPHISTRY]　これまでに影響を受けたものや人について教えてください。

[ULUC KECIK]　僕は、写真やアートに関しての教育はまったくないんだ。だからみんなが学校で習うような論理的なものにかけているかもしれない。だけど、Rod WheelansやCan Evginのアシスタントをしているうち、彼らのプロフェッショナリズムが僕に影響を与えていることは間違いない。Ara Gulerは、言わずと知れたトルコの奇才だ。国際的な縮尺で見ると、Magnum Photosの写真家たちで、特にMartin Parr、Josef Koudelka、Alex Webbからの影響は究極だ。

[SOPHISTRY]　Do you have any role models that have inspired you or influenced your works?

[ULUC KECIK]　Well, I did not get any education on photography or on art. As a result I may miss some theoretical stuff that an art school would supply the student. Nevertheless when working as their assistant Rod Wheelans and Can Evgin no doubt inspired my work with their professionalism. Not to mention how inspiring the Turkish master, Ara Guler is. On a global scale I find photographers from Magnum Photos ultimately inspiring. Especially, Martin Parr, Josef Koudelka and Alex Webb.

[SOPHISTRY]　その他、何かメッセージなどがあれば教えてください。

[ULUC KECIK]　この宇宙が魔法の場所だってことを忘れないでほしい。この影響を良い方向に活かして、他との相違を拒絶せずに楽しもう。そして「平和」を叫ぼう。

[SOPHISTRY]　Please tell us if there is a message you would like to convey.

[ULUC KECIK]　Remember what a magic place this universe is. Use this influence for good. Enjoy the dissimilarities do not hate them. And shout out: PEACE!
