[SOPHISTRY]　あなた自身についてまずは簡単な自己紹介をお願いします。

[MARK OXLEY]　僕の名前は、Mark Oxleyです。英国出身のフォトグラファーで、東京でプロダクション/クリエイティブ・エイジェンシーを運営しています。

[SOPHISTRY]　Please briefly introduce yourself.

[MARK OXLEY]　My name is Mark Oxley, I am from the UK, I am a photographer and co run a production / creative agency here in Tokyo.

[SOPHISTRY]　あなたの作品について教えてください。

[MARK OXLEY]　僕は、何かにつけクラブや音楽イベントで撮影をしていて、そのせいもあり多くのDJと知り合いになれたんだ。そのおかげで、あるファッション・ブランドから東京でDJのストリートファッションを撮影するプロジェクトがはいり、2年ほど参加することができた。そこでは、その場の明かりの加減に合わせて即興で人を撮影しなければならず、いい経験が積めたんだ。僕は埃っぽい都会の街並が好きで、灰色で薄汚れた埃っぽい風景から醸し出される雰囲気がたまらなく好きなんだ。

[SOPHISTRY]　Please tell us about your work.

[MARK OXLEY]　One way or another I found myself shooting club and music events which led to me getting to know a lot of DJ's, a particular project came up with a fashion brand to shoot DJ's wearing their clothes in around the streets of Tokyo, this lasted 2 years and actually gave me a lot of experience shooting people and having to improvise with various lighting conditions. I enjoy the grit and urban nature of the streets and inner cities, I love the character you can get from the grey's, the grime and the dirt.

[SOPHISTRY]　あなたの作品のインスピレーションはどこから生まれてくるのですか？

[MARK OXLEY]　子供の頃からずっとファッションやスタイル・マガジンが好きで、写真のあるページは必ず眺めてた。写真は趣味として17歳ぐらいから始めて、あの頃はRichard Avedonや Guy Bourdin、Helmut Newtonなどのフォトグラファーついて学んだり読んだりすることが楽しかったな。ティーンネイジャーだった頃は、Nan Goldinの作品が好きで、彼の写真を見て、フォトグラフィーが少しだけ身近になり、より現実的で実行可能なように思えた。でもこういったスタイルはファッション雑誌の写真としてはその当時の常識を越えていて、Corrine DayやNick Knight、Craig McDeanなどが雑誌の写真に対する考えを変えいったんだ。イギリスの80年代後半から90年代前半にかけてJurgen Teller（ドイツ）などがThe Faceマガジンで写真を撮り始めて、このインタビューの格を落としかねないけど、その時こういった時代の人たちにとても興味を持ち、彼らがやったことがすごく好きだった。

[SOPHISTRY]　Where do you get your inspiration from?

[MARK OXLEY]　I was always into fashion and style magazines from an early age, essentially for the photography pages, photography was a hobby from around 17 years old, I really liked certain photographers and enjoyed studying them and reading about them.
Photographers like Richard Avedon, Guy Bourdin, Helmut Newton, I really liked stuff by Nan Goldin it made photography seem a little more accessible and doable, though still along way from how my life was as a teenager. But that kind of stuff transgressed into fashion photography and the late 80's early 90's in the UK had a host of new respected names who did change the way magazines looked at photography. People like Corrine Day, Nick Knight, Craig McDean, Jurgen Teller (actually, he's German) though got his start with The Face magazine, it might sound like just dropping names for this interview, but I really was very interested in them at the time and really liked what they did.

[SOPHISTRY]　あなたが今最も興味を持っていることを教えてください。

[MARK OXLEY]　東京で自分をもっとフォトグラファーとして確立して、周りに認められる仕事がしたいと思っているけど、日本は才能あるフォトグラファーが多く、競争は激しいよ。日本はみんながフォトグラファーでDJみたいなものだろう？だけど、それなりに仕事はくるし、忙しいからいい方向に進んでいるのだろうと思っている。

[SOPHISTRY]　What are you most interested in now?

[MARK OXLEY]　I am interested in establishing myself more in Tokyo as a photographer and getting more respected and more work, but you know there are great photographers in Japan, some very capable people, and the competition is tough, everybody is a photographer or a DJ, right? However I am working regularly and am always busy, so we seem to be going in the right direction.

[SOPHISTRY]　あなたのクリーエーターとしての今後のビジョンを教えてください。

[MARK OXLEY]　僕とってアーティストとは、人と違う「オリジナリティ」な部分があるわけだけど、この過去150年以上の写真を見ても見たことがない写真ってあまりないと思う。正直に言うと、僕はあまり「アーティスト」という言葉になじめない。恵まれた才能や苦心して創られた作品にありがたみを感じるけど、この間読んだDavid Baileyのインタビューでも、彼は「アーティスト」という言葉が好きではないと言っていたよ。その時思わず、「僕も同感だ」と思ったよ。

[SOPHISTRY]　Please tell us what your vision is as an artist for the future?

[MARK OXLEY]　For me an artist always has to have something original about them, and there isn't that much we haven't seen in photography over the last 150 years. To be honest I'm never that comfortable with the word 'artist', I can appreciate great talent and how hard it can be to produce something of worth but I read an interview by David Bailey recently he said he hated the word 'artist', and I was like, 'yeah, you know what me too', I was happy to have read he said that.

[SOPHISTRY]　あなたが作品を通じて伝えたいメッセージなどがあれば教えてください。

[MARK OXLEY]　うーん、まだ自分は始まったばかりといった感があるし、まだまだ他の人の作品を見て「すごいな」とか「僕ならこうしないな」とか、自分のやってきたことを踏まえて自分に問いかけるけど、究極的には、自分が楽しくてやっていることで、最後には何かつかめると思うんだ。

[SOPHISTRY]　Tell us if there is a message you would like to express about your work.

[MARK OXLEY]　mmm...........I still feel like I am only just beginning, photography was always a battle for me, seeing other peoples stuff, and thinking 'that’s amazing' or 'I'm not doing that', always made me question what I was doing, but ultimately it is the only thing I really enjoy and finally things are working out.

[SOPHISTRY]　どのような作業環境で作品を作られているのですか。

[MARK OXLEY]　残念だけど僕はよく忙しく駆け回り、忙しい東京の街で、撮影と仕事に追われている。少ない準備期間で、現場に駆け込み、モデルを撮る。これはこれでいいことでもあるけど、自分がゆとりをもって仕事をしたらどんなことができるのか見てみたいよ。

[SOPHISTRY]　When you make your work, what kind of work environment are you in?

[MARK OXLEY]　Unfortunately I am often rushing around, Tokyo is a busy city and demanding, I find myself shooting and working on the spec, which means with little preparation, just turning up, meeting the model and doing it, which does have it's upsides actually. I really want to see what I come up with when I give myself more time to think about it!

[SOPHISTRY]　これまでに影響を受けたものや人について教えてください。

[MARK OXLEY]　自分の好きなフォトグラファーはいる、本当はもっと若いときに学ぶべきだったのかもしれない。Terry RichardsonやKeiichi Nitta、Yoneなどが好きだけど、彼らのスタイルをただ真似するとあからさまになってしまう。正直、「撮影」とは簡単そうでも、実際は難しいんだ。

[SOPHISTRY]　Do you have any role models that have inspired you or influenced your works?

[MARK OXLEY]　Again there are photographers I like, - and maybe I should study a bit more like when I was younger - I like Terry Richardson, Keiichi Nitta, Yone but I couldn't just copy their styles, it would be quite obvious and to be honest taking pictures that look easy is actually quite hard to do.

[SOPHISTRY]　今後、どのようなジャンルの作品を作っていきたいとお考えですか。

[MARK OXLEY]　もし時間があったら、埃っぽい印象を持った日本人の肖像を撮影してみるとか、さらに大きな背景で、巨大で薄暗いイメージを醸し出す「東京」の町並みで似たような感じを撮影するか、グラフィック・デザイナーと仕事してみたい。この２つを合わせてもいいかな。商業的には、ファッションや広告の撮影をもっとしたい。優れたスタイリストやメイクの人たちと仕事をしてみたい。彼らのおかげで写真はもっともっとよくなれるんだ。

[SOPHISTRY]　What kind of art genre work are you looking at doing in future?

[MARK OXLEY]　I guess if I had the time I'd like to do a gritty portrait project of Japanese people, perhaps in large format, or something similar about Tokyo, huge dark images, and work with a graphic designer and perhaps merge the two.
Commercially I want to do more and more fashion and advertising, work with good stylists, make up people and models, I mean they bring a lot to an image, and make good photo's look outstanding.

[SOPHISTRY]　今あなたが今後取り組まれる予定のプロジェクトなどがあれば教えてください。

[MARK OXLEY]　僕の会社は今「ビタミン・ウォーター」の仕事をしていて、原宿にあるH&Mビルの9階でビタミン・ウォーター「ポップ・アップ」スペースにあるスタジオで撮影をしている。僕のアイディアで（あつかましいようですが・・）、僕がメインのフォトグラファーを務め、訪れた人たちの肖像写真を撮影しているんだ。これが本当に楽しい仕事でまたどこかでやりたいと思っている。９月末までやっているから、肖像写真を撮ってもらいたい人は、近くに来た時はぜひ訪ねてください。 http://www.dripbook.com/Marko/style/photography/

[SOPHISTRY]　Tell us about your new ideas or projects for the future.

[[MARK OXLEY]　I came up with the idea, (dare I say) and am the main photographer for a project we are doing with Vitamin Water, we are doing portraits of people who come to the Vitamin Water space, it is a fun project which we would love to do again somewhere, it runs till the end of this September 09, so please drop by and get your portrait taken ! http://www.dripbook.com/Marko/style/photography/

[SOPHISTRY]　その他、何かメッセージなどがあれば教えてください。

[MARK OXLEY]　写真で伝えたいことは特に何もないんだ。人は僕の作品にはスタイルがあると言う。写真は一般的にほとんどのものを美しく見せる効果あって、ファッションやスタイル・フォトは一般的に視野が狭く定義された「クールさ」を伝えようとしている。僕は、同じものを達成しようとしているところでは「有罪」かもしれないけど、撮影していて「これだ」ってものがある時は自分で分かると思うんだ。

[SOPHISTRY]　Please tell us if there is a message you would like to convey.

[[MARK OXLEY]　There is nothing in particular I try to say in my photos. Others say I have a style. I mean photos generally have an effect of beautifying most things, and fashion and style photography generally try to convey a narrowly defined aspect of 'cool'. I probably am guilty of trying to achieve the same things, but you always know when you have the shot you are looking for.
